Understanding what we do.
The use of the phrase “Getting your Ducks in a Row” began in the early 1900’s with references based around economic circumstances.
“We have a world filled today with problems and we
are trying to get our economic ducks in a row”
Washington Post - 13 June 1932
“It quite frequently happens that when political parties and even
nations think they have ‘their ducks in a row’ the unexpected
happens which knocks their well-laid plans awry.”
The Daily Progress - 16 June 1910
However its origins are understood to be based in the game of bowling, and refers specifically to the pins. Originally being shorter and fatter than current-day pins, they were known as “ducks”. As the pins were previously replaced manually, it was essential the “ducks” were organised and place correctly.
